#6 Tornado Tantrums (1974 & 2011)

Tornadoes plague the midwest almost annually, and at times, more than one can touch down in a given place. But on April 3 and April 4 in 1974, a flood of tornadoes spread across 13 states in the Ohio valley, causing over a billion dollars (adjusted for inflation) in damage and claiming the lives of 335 people in the process. An astounding 148 twisters tore into the U.S., with some reaching a circumference of 5 miles wide! Then again in 2011, from April 25 to April 28, another flurry of tornadoes ravaged America, hitting as far north as Pennsylvania and New York and reaching down to the Deep South. As warm air at the ground level collided with the colder airs above, and atmospheric wind shears moved in, these catastrophic disasters left their mark on populated areas repeatedly throughout the 3-day span. This time, 349 twisters took the lives of over 300 people, and caused 10.8 billion dollars in damage!

#5 Dark Day (1780)

In the 18th Century, meteorology wasn’t anywhere near as exact or capable of explaining weather-related phenomena the way is today. So it’s no wonder that accounts of the day when the sky went dark on May 19, 1780 are so superstitious and foreboding. Following right on the tail end of the American Revolution, the newly founded nation was already tense. So when the Sun turned red, black rain fell from the sky carrying the scent of coal fire, and the population had to rely on candlelight in the middle of the day to see, you can understand how frightened Americans might’ve felt. Rather than any sort of Armageddon or Judgment Day, though, this scary ordeal can be attributed to a forest fire in the Ontario forests. The origin of the legendary Dark Day in New England wasn’t discovered until 2007, when forestry experts out of the University of Missouri discovered fire scars in the woods of Ontario corresponding to that date!

There have been plenty of weird weather events that have happened on earth, dating back to the roman era! some of these events were thought to be mythology such as blood rain and raining animals, however that is no longer the case.

Many of these extreme weather events do have probable explanations, however the explanations have holes in their arguments.

By the way this video ONLY includes weather mysteries that we think PROBABLY happened. We left out a lot of ‘fantasy’ weather events because we do try our best to not include non-scientific events as fact in our videos.

1. Moon Halo
Halos are normally formed around the Sun due to ice crystals refracting light in the upper atmosphere. The same phenomena are possible with the Moon, but are much rarer.

2. The Green Flash
The Green Flash occurs very briefly on the horizon over a body of water before a total sunset and just after a sunrise. It’s caused by the atmosphere refracting only the green spectrum of light.

3. Lightning
Catatumbo Lightning occurs only over the mouth of the Catatumbo River in Venezuela. Clashing warm and cold fronts and methane-emitting marshes create the perfect conditions in the area for lightning storms that last for hours.

4. Mammatus Clouds
Mammatus clouds often extend from the base of thunder clouds, and appear as smooth, bumpy shapes. They aren’t fully understood, but many meteorologists believe they form due to differential warming pushing pockets of air up in to the cloud.

5. Morning Glory
The Morning Glory cloud is a rare phenomenon consisting of a low-level wave of air pressure accompanied by a roll cloud. The clouds appear most commonly over Australia, and usually follow a high pressure system moving across the country.

6. Fire Whirls
Fire whirls occur as a tornado-like vortex of flame during a fire, and are caused when air is forced to shift against competing air temperatures and speeds.

7. Pyrocumulus Clouds
Pyrocumulus clouds are formed by the intense heating of the air from either a fire or volcanic activity. A related phenomenon, the pyrocumulo-nimbus cloud, is such a cloud that produces rain, and may even extinguish the fire that created it.

8. Sun Pillars
A sun pillar is a vertical shaft of light extending upward or downward from the sun. Typically seen during sunrise or sunset, sun pillars form when sunlight reflects off the surfaces of falling ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds.

9. Volcanic Lightning
One of the most spectacular and violent-looking weather phenomena, volcanic lightning, otherwise known as a dirty thunderstorm, occurs when the colliding particles in the gasses of a volcanic eruption become charged.
