Unexpected wind and water is not confined to the sea. I was at a wedding in Minnesota field that got hit by a phenomenon known ad a derecho which is straight line winds accompanying a line of thunderstorms with winds as high as a cat 1 hurricane. The tent went airborne.
Working on fishing boats for years , I've seen 40 – 50 ft seismic waves coming at you from a flat and glassy sea .

How did you determine the parameters of the ranking? Seems a little unfair that a tsunami that killed thousands is lower on the list than cruise ship waves the passenger is laughing at.

By the way, the reason why the waves get so enormous in Nazaré, Portugal, is due to a massive deep-sea trench located just off the coast. This trench ascends sharply towards the shore at Nazaré, which is why the waves reach such remarkable heights

never trusth the occean or little ponds, that sayed yes maybe a mountain river gives you faster lesions, and injuries but its better as drowing or dying on parasites.
My brother was on a sub, & he says that when there's a storm at sea, it's just as vicious under the water.

I've been in 80 foot seas with 100 foot rogue waves on the Bering. Just because people are laughing, don't assume they don't think they are about to die. we all deal with it differently. personally, I thought I might die but after a 3 day storm and high seas, I didn't care too much.
