Trudeau promises Canada Water Act update a priority for new agency | FULL

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to questions on Wednesday concerning the construction of the new Canada Water Agency office, to be situated in Manitoba. Trudeau said water ecology and health are a top priority for the country and the prairies are perfect for research and management of water.

“Today I can announce that one of the first priorities of the agency will be to update the Canada Water Act, the threats and realities facing our environment have changed since it was written in 1970,” Trudeau said in his remarks.

Taking questions from reporters, Trudeau also reiterated his support for special rapporteur David Johnston’s recommendation against a public inquiry into allegations of foreign election interference, accusing Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre of “choosing to sit behind a veil of ignorance.”

“I think Canadians have to ask themselves the question, is that a serious leader? Is that a serious way to handle something as important as foreign countries trying to mess with our democracy, with our businesses, with our diaspora communities on an issue like this?” Trudeau asked.

In tonight’s top story: A day ago, it seemed unlikely that WestJet would reach a deal with its pilots, who threatened to strike. But, a late-night tentative agreement has stopped full-blown turmoil before the Victoria Day long weekend. As Mike Drolet reports, customers travelling this week are still frustrated.

Also, the G7 stressed the need for denuclearization during Friday’s meeting in Japan. Mackenzie Gray reports.

Before heading to Japan for the G7 Summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a surprise stop in Saudi Arabia, where he addressed leaders at the Arab League Summit. Here, he made a personal appeal to broaden support for Ukraine amid Russia’s war, beyond its Western Allies. Crystal Goomansingh has the story on Ukraine’s desperate plea for more help.

Turning to the wildfires in Canada, more than 10,000 people are still out of their homes in Alberta and beyond tonight, as nearly 100 fires burn. But, there’s hope on the horizon as more crews from the Yukon and U.S. are expected to arrive in the coming days to help the fight. As Neetu Garcha reports, residents are trying to make the best out of a very bad situation.

Plus, it’s Disney versus DeSantis. Just days before Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to launch his presidential campaign, Disney has backed out of plans to build a $1-billion corporate campus in his state. This is the latest outburst in a long-running feud between the corporation and the Republican governor, linked to DeSantis’s anti-LGBTQ2+ policies. As Jackson Proskow explains, Disney’s decision could do real damage to the governor’s brand at a crucial time.

And Parky.ai is a smartphone app developed in Montreal to help users decipher the confusing, and at times contradictory, parking signs. The app uses artificial intelligence to decode complex combinations of parking signs. Mike Armstrong tells us more about this useful app.

US tornadoes: About 40 million people under severe weather warning

In the U.S., some 40 million Americans remain under severe weather warnings as destructive tornadoes lash parts of the country.

Now, Americans are bracing for another round of wicked weather.

As Jennifer Johnson reports, the National Weather Service indicates there have been 478 tornadoes in 2023 across 25 states so far.

People in Western Canada are struggling to find relief, as a dangerous, record-breaking heat wave continues to bake the region. Heather Yourex-West reports on the deadly toll the extreme weather is taking and how first responders are being flooded with emergency calls.

As that happens throughout western North America, scientists are expecting more similar, extreme weather events in Canada’s future, as climate change grips the planet. Eric Sorensen explains what’s being forecasted.

Meanwhile, a new report from Natural Resources Canada finds much of the country, including people, companies and governments, is not equipped to handle extreme weather,. As David Akin explains, federal scientists warn action needs to be taken now.

In Florida, the Miami Herald has published photos taken just two days before Champlain Tower collapsed, showing how badly repairs were needed at the Surfside complex. As Jackson Proskow reports, attention is turning to other aging apartment buildings in the Miami area.

Plus, Canada’s actual COVID-19 death toll could be much higher than what’s been recorded, according to a new study by the Royal Society of Canada. Abigail Bimman explains how thousands more fatalities may have gone unreported.

And Wilson 5, the foundation from the family of billionaire and Lululemon founder Chip Wilson, has donated $4 million to the B.C. Parks Foundation, to help preserve and protect the province’s rare forests on three different islands. Robin Gill reports.

2020-2021 winter forecast: Here’s what weather Canadians can expect

COVID-19 means more Canadians will be spending the winter at home than ever before and trips to tropical beaches will likely be replaced with local outdoor activities like skiing, skating and snowmobiling, but all of this requires snow.

In a typical La Niña winter, much of southern Canada gets blanketed in snow thanks to an active northern jet stream and an almost constant supply of cold air feeding south from the Arctic.

Unfortunately, computer models are not in agreement with the upcoming winter so confidence in my forecast is lower than usual.

Global News chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell has a detailed look at what weather you can expect across Canada this winter.
