Residents of Western Australia’s southwest region are preparing for more severe weather following yesterday’s unprecedented rainfall in Perth, marking the heaviest downpour in five years.

This weather event also made it the coldest day of the year in the city.

Sky News Chief Meteorologist Tom Saunders says a rare combination of weather drivers could bring extensive flooding to Australia throughout the remainder of 2022.

Mr Saunders said the ongoing La Niña phase of the Pacific Ocean had already recorded Sydney’s wettest autumn – and pointed to another incoming climate driver, a negative Indian Ocean Dipole.

“The last negative Indian Ocean Dipole was 2016, and that was an exceptionally wet winter and spring,” he told Sky News Australia.
