Fun fact: 3 of Henry VIII’s wives were closely related. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were both grandchildren of the Duke of Norfolk and therefore 1st cousins, and Jane Seymour was their second cousin.

It might also be noted that The Royal Scots Navy fought alongside the English against the Spanish (both navies being of comparable size at the time….Scotland going on to build the Largest warship in the World, The Great Michael, which was over x2 the size of the Mary Rose) and it was the Scots who harassed the Spanish fleet up the west coast where they lost most of the fleet.

The ship in the dock is the Golden Hind, she was built by traditional methods at Hinks dockyard in Appledore, north Devon in 1973. She did circumnavigate the globe and made other voyages before being put on permanent exhibition in London.

Tom Johnston June 17, 2023 at 9:30 am

The theatre was not burnt down in the Fire of London. No buildings on the south side of the Thames were burnt down in 1666.

Cheryl Stortvedt June 17, 2023 at 3:50 pm

She finds Shakespeare boring. If and when I go to the UK I don't want her as a guide.

Does becoming a historian mean you have to sacrifice a sense of humour

maiki June 20, 2023 at 9:36 pm

But that is how branches of religions are often born (out of power struggles). A certain leader or a group of leaders doesnt want to be under someones control and then over time the new religion developes out of that original rift. Christian church also went through the same kind of power struggle between the church in Rome and the church in Byzantium. Of course there were also some religious issues but I think a lot can be boiled down to leaders of the church not wanting to give up their power and become a subordinate of the other leader.

Matthew Pocock June 22, 2023 at 11:33 am

One of Sir Francis Drake's daughters married a Pocock, my family line. You and I are distant relatives. Perhaps a love of history runs in the family – I know sailing does.

Paul Oneill June 22, 2023 at 11:37 am

She ruled for 9 days, that's almost a week!. Lol.

Godstone United Benefice June 22, 2023 at 12:54 pm

The ship is a replica of the Golden Hind and can be found close to the Anglican Cathedral at Southwark. There is another replica in Brixham in Devon.

Reminded me British comedians like Monty python members telling history too, what ever ways make my big kids interested in history. Better history educated, better voters

Ingens_Scherz June 23, 2023 at 1:00 am

I've always liked to think of it as a kind of informed prejudice, but I was expecting something quite different from a dozy Yank. But this is marvellous. You actually, really do, know your stuff! I especially appreciate the Welsh bits being, as I am, half-Welsh. Thanks!
I will make it a priority to review, update and refine my prejudice.

Drahc Ulia June 23, 2023 at 10:55 am

Try "The Day Today" and "Brass Eye".

John Thomson June 23, 2023 at 3:19 pm

This is so fake – it's ridiculous!!!

Ken H June 23, 2023 at 7:13 pm

I recently watched a show called "Wolf Hall' about Thomas Cromwell, Henery VIII and Anne Boleyn. I was just wondering if you've seen it and could comment on it. I found it very interesting, but I know sometime these shows play fast and loose with the actual history.

Peadar Ruane June 23, 2023 at 7:25 pm

You missed a very good play on words at one point, when he was described as being at Catherine-o-holic….or Catholic for short.

Aarni Immonen June 23, 2023 at 11:26 pm

21:45 So that's why you look like Nathan Drake

Tony Broderick June 23, 2023 at 11:46 pm

The ship is The Golden Hind. I'm not sure if it's a Replica or the real thing.

Ricky Marasigan June 24, 2023 at 1:26 am

This dude is missing so many jokes… C'mon dude!

Kim Wilson June 24, 2023 at 6:35 am

The ship @22:50 would be the Golden Hinde

Jane Green June 24, 2023 at 3:01 pm

The reference to the break with Rome equates to Brexit.

SVP GAMING June 24, 2023 at 7:52 pm

that ship is the Golden Hinde Francs Drakes ship

Dalton Brown June 24, 2023 at 8:43 pm

Just watched this on Netflix, it was so funny.

HappyAs Larry June 26, 2023 at 1:41 pm

I know this period very well, and you sir, are a scholar. Dianne Morgan is so funny.

Gary Turner June 26, 2023 at 6:00 pm

Henry VIII had six spouses, or "spice", the first of which was Catherine of Tarragon. Then there was Anne of Cloves. Another one was Catherine Parrsley. Henry was married to all of them by the Archbishop of Cranberry. 😁

david sigler June 29, 2023 at 6:38 pm

Robert Shaw was the best Henry VIII…..

Caerseth July 2, 2023 at 8:10 pm

I believe the quote is "I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman. But I have the heart and stomach of a concrete elephant."

We like chopping peoples heads off, so Charlie 3 had better keep his mouth shut!😊

Capital B July 4, 2023 at 1:51 pm

I loved that second between “dried spunk in her hair” and you closing your eyes.

Stevie Gee July 5, 2023 at 1:06 pm

One slight correction – The Globe theatre wasn't destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. It burned down in an accident in 1613, was rebuilt, then finally demolished in the mid-1640s.

Scimarad July 5, 2023 at 7:39 pm

Despite all that, Jane Seymour still went on to have a starring role in Battlestar Galactica.

Liz Roberts July 5, 2023 at 10:06 pm

This is the first time I’ve watched Cunk, so glad you introduced her. Brilliant, funny and I’ve learnt things 😂

James jaremko July 6, 2023 at 8:41 am

interesting and cool that you are descended from Drake. I recently found out that my family is in part descended from Captain James Cook's Sister. Not quite as exciting as Drake though!
