A number of people have lost their lives after become trapped in flood waters.

Residents in Madrid have been asked to stay at home due to “the exceptional and abnormal” rainfall, the city’s mayor said.

The record amounts of rainfall were due to a slow-moving storm.

The rains have caused mudslides on many roads and train services have been suspended in affected areas.

The extreme rain follows a scorching summer in Spain and much of southern Europe. Climate scientists are warning that extreme weather events are becoming far more common due to global warming.

Temperatures are expected to surpass 40C (104F) in parts of Spain, France, Greece, Croatia and Turkey.

In Italy, temperatures could reach as high as 48.8C (119.8F). A red alert warning has been issued for 10 cities, including Rome, Bologna and Florence.

The Cerberus heatwave – named by the Italian Meteorological Society after the three-headed monster that features in Dante’s Inferno – is expected to bring more extreme conditions in the next few days.

It isn’t just Europe that is hot. This summer has seen temperature records smashed in parts of Canada and the US as well as across a swathe of Asia including in India and China.

Sea temperatures in the Atlantic have hit record highs while Antarctic sea ice is at the lowest extent ever recorded.
And it is going to get hotter.

A weather pattern called El Niño is developing in the tropical Pacific. It tends to drive up temperatures by around 0.2C on average.

Add in the roughly 1.1C that climate change has pushed average temperatures up by worldwide and it’s perilously close to the 1.5C threshold the world has agreed to try and keep global temperatures below.

National records have fallen in eight countries – and regional records in another three.

Warsaw, Poland, saw highs of 18.9C (66F) on Sunday while Bilbao, Spain, experienced 25.1C – more than 10C above average.

Temperatures in the Netherlands, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Latvia, Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark and Belarus also broke national records.

The BBC’s team received hundreds of abusive tweets or emails questioning their reports and telling them to “get a grip”, as temperatures hit 40C.

“The weather is very emotive. It gets people so worked up,” said BBC meteorologist Matt Taylor, adding that he had never experienced anything like it in nearly 25 years working in weather.

In the Italian alps, at least seven people have been killed after being caught in an avalanche sparked by the collapse of the Marmolada glacier.

Meanwhile, Australia’s largest city Sydney saw torrential rain and flooding, in which a man died and thousands were evacuated.

At the end of June, Japan suffered its worst heatwave ever recorded which saw more than 5,000 across the country hospitalised.

Attribution studies is the name that weather experts give to the process of linking weather events to human-influenced climate change.

So far scientists have published more than 150 attribution studies looking at weather events around the world.

Here are some of the things the Met Office says it has discovered:

Heatwaves – Almost all studies on extreme heat events found that they are becoming more likely and more extreme because of climate change influenced by human actions. The Earth has warmed by about 1.2C already since pre-industrial levels – so that extra heat is added to every naturally-occurring heatwave.
Drought – About half of the studies on drought showed significant human influence.
Extreme rainfall (which can cause flooding) – Many factors contribute to flooding, but an increasing number of studies on extreme rainfall have found that a warming atmosphere caused by climate change makes extreme rainfall more likely.
Tropical storms and hurricanes – This one is complicated, according to the Met Office. There is strong evidence that warming sea temperatures increase the intensity of tropical storms. As well as this, rising sea levels also increase the risk of coastal flooding. However, there may be an overall decrease in the total number of global tropical cyclones.
