Storm Henk batters UK – as 94mph gusts cause widespread disruption and damage

Storm Henk has battered the UK with winds of up to 94mph, felling trees and scaffolding.

Henk pummelled southwest England and south Wales, with many parts of southern England, the south Midlands and East Anglia also experiencing strong winds.

Gusts of 94mph were recorded on the Isle of Wight, with fallen trees blocking a rail line in Hastings – causing major delays.

With unprecedented heat waves and record-breaking global temperatures, it’s hard to believe that there might be a place on earth that has actually COOLED since the industrial revolution. But, it turns out, there is such a spot. The COLD BLOB off of Greenland mystified scientists for years, but new studies have uncovered a scary reality – this cool patch might be a warning of the impending collapse of a vital earth circulation system. And the consequences would be dire.

In this episode of Weathered, we travel to the Gulf Stream with the new PBS Terra show Sharks Unknown to experience the AMOC first hand. And we ask, what is the likelihood that the AMOC will collapse, and what would the consequences be?

Global warming to hit 1.5C heat threshold by 2027

The global temperature is set to exceed 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for the first time in the next five years, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has warned.

There is a 66% chance of this temperature being recorded at least once between now and 2027 – which would mark the first time in human history.

However, scientists have stressed this would not mean the world had permanently surpassed the threshold.

Almost every country in the world has committed to trying to limit warming to ideally 1.5C above levels before the Industrial Revolution.

The Arctic is experiencing global warming much faster than the rest of the world. A new study shows four times faster, in fact! One of the effects of this accelerated warming is the melting sea ice in the Arctic. And researchers off the southeast coast of Greenland have started to notice some surprising and alarming new guests.

A variety of exotic marine life have begun to move in, now able to live in the warmer waters. And while this may serve as a boon to some of the inhabitants of the region and its fishing economy, it also signals profound and likely permanent ecosystem changes and points toward the kinds of tipping points we may see if we continue emitting greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. What is the RISKIEST Region in the US as the Climate Changes?

And in the United States, more and more people seem to be moving to the places that are projected to be most impacted by climate change, from hazards such as flooding, wildfire, storms, drought and extreme heat; and leaving the most climate-resilient areas. At first glance, this seems like a bizarre and paradoxical trend. So, for this episode of Weathered, we decided to see if we could get to the bottom of it.
