The month of July is all but set to go down in history as one marked by an unprecedented number of extreme weather events globally. In Asia, the dire picture largely ricocheted between deadly floods and scorching temperatures. Meanwhile, blistering heatwaves swept across the northern hemisphere, shattering temperature records across Europe and the US. Experts have described July 2023 as the hottest month ever globally. Professor Janette Lindesay, a climatologist at the Australian National University, shared more about the recent extreme weather events.

At least eight people have died and this weekend’s Formula 1 Grand Prix has been called off, amid severe weather in Europe.

There is now a 66% chance of breaching a global average temperature 1.5C at least once before 2027 – which would mark the first time in human history.
