although i'm an atheist by belief, i'm a high church Christian from Anglican and Roman traditions by upbringing and education.

i actually think that there is some reason behind religions related to the weather– or at least that any deity you give your respect to, needs to have a feat under their belt pertaining to the weather, because it is very relevant to agriculture which we all actually need to go well.

that is why i find it is a bit saddening that not enough talk is shared discussing Jesus' calming of the sea, because Christians ordinarily do not care about the weather all that much (compared to worshippers of Thor and Zeus, lol). But in actuality, back in Jesus' time, he definitely knew that the ability to calm the sea, was important, and the witnesses agreed it was important, too, and were impressed that he could command the weather.

even if the talk were critical or questioning and skeptical, my point is that relationships to the weather are -important-, and what people are saying or doing with or about the weather is always worth talking about. ๐Ÿ™‚
likewise it is fascinating to me the interesting places where astrology and astronomy just happen to overlap and the overlap between alchemy and chemistry.

the elements of nature — are they gods themselves, the toys of gods, or are they greater than gods? are they people, are they objects for people to control, or are they forces greater than people? the two sets of three questions are not the same, but all six questions should be asked every day.

when a meteor decides it might be time to visit Earth again, i will not complain about who stops it from hitting us and will accept help from just about anyone! @.@

Lmao you really took the highest estimate you could find 2.5 degrees Celsius my ass most estimates are less than 1 over the next century as a history buff I'd hope you would see the way earth's climate has changed every time the axis shifts we are one shift away from another long cooling period

jffryh November 9, 2023 at 6:14 am

The little ice age wasn't global. I believe it was restricted mostly to Europe

Witches were persecuted right at the same time as industrialization. They were deeply respected for there knowledge of remedies and other things. Also they are a testament to womenโ€™s resistance to subjugation and exploitation from men

Wonder if putting ash on it would have helped? As it would have changed the reflective properties of it and maybe have slowed it down.

Joshua Parr November 11, 2023 at 6:55 pm

It is important to realize, that every theory about the little ice age involves the earth's relationship to the sun. Whether tilt, sun spots, volcanic ash, reaction to the medieval warming period, it all affected our relationship with the sun.

And now we see if this happens again as expected or if the global warming people are somehow correct despite the evidence against them. Either way it will suck to live near the coast.

Holy Cow!!! 'Climate Change' BEFORE the industrial Revolution. It's almost as if the climate can drastically change even without all that bad, evil, no good, bad, vile CO2 entering the atmosphere in large post-industrialization amounts.

Sean C November 12, 2023 at 5:58 am

Any historians arguing about the mini ice age dates arent bright because with the tree ring and ice core samples, the date is pretty evident. Consensus shouldnt be held back by morons which is why our understanding of earlh human history despite overwhelming history hasnt changed in over a century. Its a joke.

Raycheetah November 12, 2023 at 9:15 am

Dithering over in which exact century these climatic shifts occurred seems pretty academic, when taken in the perspective of geologic time. ALL of this was the briefest of moments ago, relative to the actual scale of macroclimatic change over time. In the bigger picture, we are reckoned to be in the midst of the Holocene Epoch, an interglacial period which started around 11k years ago. Not the end of, but in the midst of, and certainly not guaranteed to remain warm. I think all the hysteria fostered over the decades about "global warming" by public figures curiously disinclined to walk the walk they talk is just more hokum by those who wish to sell us a solution to a problem they simply made up. However, if somehow humankind actually had the capability to affect any deliberate change on macroclimatic trends, we'd all best hope that capability was bent toward warming the planet, rather than fostering a cooling trend. =9[.]9=

ferrante12345 November 12, 2023 at 11:49 am

A caveat about the word "theory" (maybe others have pointed it out): Maybe in historical research, it is used as some reasonable but lacking full evidence idea (and I concur this is a widespread interpretation, even in some fields as theoretical physics!). In experimental sciences (and other fields), theory is a body of knowledge strongly supported by evidence.
To avoid confusion (charlatans and quackers profit from that), it might be better to talk about "hypotheses," not using "theory" when there is a lack of evidence. Theories can be controversial, of course, but on details.

The Professor Keen November 13, 2023 at 12:14 am

It makes you wonder. If our best and brightest can't figure out what happened back then what time zone and the full reason why the mini ice age happened. Then how does our current scientist really have a clue as to what is happening now? I get the feeling we're just bubbling around in the dark and clueless.

Eric Caron November 13, 2023 at 5:05 pm

Just wanted to throw out there that when discussing science and science adjacent things avoid using the word "theory" when you mean hypothesis or guess. Theories in science are facts and the phrase "it's just a theory" is a common talking point for evolution deniers to try and discredit evolution, so when you use theory like that it can help cloud the waters on what Scientific Theories actually are.

Ben Hur November 13, 2023 at 6:15 pm

Correcrion: The -1.5 to -2 figure is incorrect for the entire world, looking at the estimated global temperature average the drop was more around -0.2. The drop in temperature was most pronounced in the North Atlantic region though, where I'd imagine the figure would be more accurate, alongside Europe and North America, given their weather, especially Europe's is heavily influenced by the North Atlantic. Iceland and Greenland would have been affected especially hard by this too, given their mild climate is reliant upon the North Atlantic to moderate its temperature.

Armin Hergl November 13, 2023 at 7:35 pm

A slight correction at 6:53
If you put water into sulphuric oxide, it sulphurous acid H2SO3, not sulphuric acid H2SO4, which only forms if a catalyst is present.

I personally think that the climate situation the world is going through currently is like the Little Ice Age but with warming instead of cooling. Though Human activity is definitely accelerating the shift and making it a bit worse.

Arcadius Drathalas November 23, 2023 at 2:45 am

Saying that the little ice age is "just a theory" is the wrong way to say it. A theory in science is the highest level of certainty, think the theory of gravity. It's actually quite harmful to use that colloquial term. That's how we get creationists using it to try and justify teaching creationism and not evolution in schools.

The real lesson we must learn here is how to start it again…
If we set off a thermonuclear device to stimulate a Category 7 volcanic eruption we can set global warming back by 30 years!

TheLaziestOfSloths November 26, 2023 at 9:14 pm

You shouldnt trash on the word "theory" too much. a modern theory is the most accepted explanation of what we observe. Gravity, Evolution, Atomic Theory, Quantum Mechanics, all Theory's, all of them are the best explanation for what we are able to observe.
