What Happened to the Vikings After Battling The Native Americans

As quickly as they came, they left. Stories of Vikings in North America tell of mysterious lands and foreign tribes known only as Skraelings. It was 1,000 AD. For nearly 12,000 years, the Americas had been cut off from Eurasia. Civilizations developed on each side without knowledge that the other existed. Nearly 500 years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue, the Vikings journeyed to the Americas from Greenland and Iceland, possibly multiple times. And it wasn’t very peaceful.

Welcome back to Nutty History. Today, we’re examining the Viking fingerprints in North America, their clashes with the Native Americans, and why they disappeared almost as soon as they arrived.

Who do you think would have won in a battle, the brutal Vikings or the Native American warriors?

Steve MacKenzie November 4, 2022 at 1:32 am

NA actives didn't have the valuable loot like Europe did. Wasn't worth the fight for some furs.

Did anyone else go wait what? When the native Americans attacked the Vikings with catapults?

Ah Jodie November 4, 2022 at 3:35 am

Thank you. Native Americans were strong fighters too. Too bad they had to fight… perhaps…

The Native Americans kicked their ass so bad the Vikings never talked about it again and decided to go back to Iceland where there was nobody to fight back and now we have Iceland.

Point One. The peoples encountered by the "Vikings" were not Native Americans. They were, and still are, First Nations or Indigenous peoples. Point two. The vikings had at least one settlement in Canada but none whatsoever in America.

Well, we used gorilla tactics in our own territory in our forests, on our own land. So, I think us natives would have, but in a straight up battle probably not.

Wade November 4, 2022 at 3:42 pm

They likely realized there were no gold and metal objects to loot and left

Mrs. Ingstad was the archeologist. Beacause she was a woman, she was not recognized as being worthy of credit, so she lead peole to believe she was there only as an assistant to her husband in order for her work to be taken seriously. Another settlement has now been sidcovered and confirmed the Southwestern coast of Newfoundland at Point Rosee,

The graphics are terrible!! When the Norse came to What is now Maritime Canada from about 1000-the 1300s, they were no longer β€œVikings” but Greenland and Iceland settlers who by 1050 became part of the Catholic Church. They did fight and kill the first Indians they came into contact with, but later they traded with them. It became an uneasy bargain relationship. The Greenlanders managed to stay in Greenland until the early 1400s.
