Why do we see so much extreme winter weather even as the climate warms? Veteran climate scientist Judah Cohen describes one theory explaining the connection between changes in the jetstream, polar vortex events, and climate change. These bring blizzards, cold temperatures, and record-breaking snowfall to places that are expected to be warming. Examples are the Texas deep freeze in 2021 and in 2022, the extreme snow in Virginia which stranded drivers on I95 for over 24 hours. Watch to find out how global warming could be the cause of major weather shifts that actually increase snowfall events.

In 2015, Boston was brought to its knees by the worst winter on record, receiving an unprecedented 110 inches of snow. And over the last decade, the American Northeast has seen more than a 200% increase in the frequency of large, disruptive snowstorms. This trend surprised nearly everybody, including many of the top experts, as they had been expecting a warming planet to translate into milder winters. But in many locations, we have seen just the opposite. So what’s going on here?

We traveled to Boston to search for answers about these surprising effects of climate change and their connection to the jet stream, the polar vortex, and a phenomenon known as “arctic amplification.” We also discuss some of the most common risks like hypothermia, frostbite, heart attacks, and traffic accidents that make winter weather, far and away, the deadliest natural hazard of them all.

Weathered is a show hosted by meteorologist Maiya May and produced by Balance Media that helps explain the most common natural disasters, what causes them, how they’re changing, and what we can do to prepare.

Global warming is fake.

I don’t understand how an inch of snow can cripple an entire state

Winters aren't getting worse they have been the same since I was a kid some are just worse than others but it's not getting worse at all

Depends where you live. Where I live winters are getting softer en warmer. As a child I used to be able to iceskate every year, but that is getting more and more rare. And snow is at most 2 cm for 2 days in the entire winter if any at all. No snow, but way more rain.

Gregory S Mann February 12, 2022 at 2:07 pm

One block of ice makes a small area cold. A million icebergs floating all over every ocean… now that's going to make it cooler in the long run.

Who wasn't paying attention??

AtlanticLove February 13, 2022 at 9:53 pm

LMAO, none. I repeat, NONE, of the many places I actively track weather on, are having "worse winters". The winters are producing less and less snow, and are not as cold (or for nearly as long) as they used to be. You sheep ever hear of something called anomalies? I'm glad I invest my time in weather data.

Amazing amount of information! My question would be: W about the South pole interaction?

To all the global warming people. Earth is a self healing organism, we are just along for the ride. The planet will be fine. Us not so much. We had our time and decided to waste it with hate and judgment.

Melissa Richter February 19, 2022 at 1:52 am

Her comment about Boston experiencing the coldest decade since record keeping began, has been so over played. Every normal weather condition that occurs every season, is now reported AS THE WORST IN HISTORY. Witch of course, is impossible. This is what propaganda looks like to push a false narrative. Really hope after hearing this nonsense for the last 10-15 years, people realize they're being manipulated.

My sister-in-law was stuck there on the Perimeter (Atlanta) for 7 hours. She walked home because it was quicker. She walked to her car the next day. It was still stuck in the same place 7 hours later.

Climate change is a hoax brought to you by money hungry people hoping that we are all dumb enough to by into the weather has always changed sometimes drastically and some times not so much global warming was the begining of the Hoax.

chris fuller February 27, 2022 at 12:15 am

Winters getting worse? What a lie, winters in Minnesota have been very mild for the past 20 years compared to the 1970s-2000. We almost never get 20 inch snowfalls anymore but such events occurred nearly every year in the 70's through early 1990s

Natural essentials decreasing. Weather extremes increasing… Mother Earth-Resets. When humanity as a whole can respect Mother Earth Natural Harmony – laws we could evolve. Halt over-consuming. Halt overtake natural essential. Live in our means. Local thrives. Global could thrive… A wise evolution is needed to replace one glove fits all agenda…have leaders who lead with Wisdom. Because politicians need global warming to be true to amass more power through fear.

HappyQuails March 19, 2022 at 3:59 am

Because warmth means the warmer air holds more humidity and erratic jet stream patterns cause unexpected weather patterns including excessive rainfall resulting in excessive snowfall and floods originating on the equator. So the increased amounts of ice result from the same causes….. you can work out the rest of the details plainly

Ok , Heres some science as the sun activity weakens so does earths magnetosphere , this in turn allows for an increase of cosmic rays to penatrate earth resulting in an increase of cloud nuclei atmospheric events and volcanic activity ( atmospheric paticulate aerosol injection). Also a weak magnetosphere allows for jet streams to go out of flow , resulting in drastic meridional patterns. When the sun cycle is active earths magnetospere will repond by strenthening to say meet the challenge , this gives way to a more predictable west to east Zonal jet steam. Grand solar minima cycles can create warming events in most northern lattitudes and those extreme frigid air maases to dip down further south . When the sun cycle is at grand maxima or grand minima you can expect extremes climatic shifts to occur. Grand cycles can last 30-50 yrs depending. usually a three 11yr cycle plateau sandwiched between opposite significant 11 yr cycles.

Another Laurentide ice sheet would be called a shift to normal I guess.

Robert Long April 10, 2022 at 5:56 am

It’s only getting colder to the younger people, for us old farts, it’s just returning to normal.

Jody Hakala-Ristow April 21, 2022 at 7:26 pm

Stop making excuses I’m sick of people in the south constantly saying they’re not able to deal with that on the weather where I live we get 4 inches of snow we go to work we go to school we just drive further apart from the other car go slower, it’s about mentality stop enabling this bad behavior,. it’s completely ridiculous; can’t figure it out there’s really nothing different stop saying it snow plows because it’s not. 7:20

9:01 I’m confused why you went to safety kit and talking about the medical cold 🥶… that’s off topic. I thought we’re talking about the climate. I guess because your in warmer area and many see this know these aspects. Great work interviewing others. And more deep into fracking effects. Plz

I live in Alaska. I'm looking at all the snow in the lower 48 and wondering to myself – "what's the problem"?

Fireworks, bombing maybe we should think a bit more.

ReishHaLevi May 7, 2022 at 3:13 pm

Lol "for the time being" I guess enjoy winter while we can before it's endless summer.

Randal Cox May 11, 2022 at 8:35 pm

Many/most talk/act as though this if the first time that something like this has happened on earth. It is not the first time that this has happened! And I am quite certain that no internal combustion engines where present at the previous time it happened!. What many have come to call "global warming" in this point in time, is simply a extremely small window in time, of a much larger cycle, that the earth experiences, throughout the ages of time. Ices ages/cooling and warming/thawing are just part of the cycle. Mankind is only a mere speck on the windshield of time. He is only along for the ride and has basically no control of anything of nature. We cannot even keep a river in its banks, much less control the melt of a glacier or rising oceans. To think we do is laughable.

Bill Kallas May 16, 2022 at 4:27 am

It was a very mild Winter, in Northern Illinois. For the second year in a row, I didn't have to use my snow blower to clear off a foot of snow. I only had two to three inches, at most, at a time (easy to clear off with a snow shovel)
I can remember when Winter meant that there were 10 days when we would get a foot of snow. This year, we've had three days in mid May where at was 90 degrees. I can live with that.

Welcome to winter southern U.S. don't worry you get used to it. and lets be honest a nice break from the heat is never a bad thing.

To answer your question, global warming is the biggest scam in history. Nice try telling us that it's hot and that's causing snow. "The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command." – George Orwell.

John Walters May 28, 2022 at 11:29 pm

Climate change greatly affects the Jet stream. The Jet stream determines our climate. Making changes that can be wetter, drier, colder and hotter.

L Pappas May 29, 2022 at 6:41 am

The warming of the arctic does not destabilize the jet stream, it weakens the jet stream, The strength of the jet stream frequently changes over time. A jet stream is caused by the change in elevation of the tropopause. So, we have a drama queen promoting climate change. Back in the 1950's there were polar out breakes, today they call them polar vortexes.
